The Old Vine Registry has launched the OVR Seal, a global program allowing producers to identify wines made from registered old-vine vineyards on labels, websites, and other marketing materials. The initiative was announced on October 1, 2026.
A wine may use the seal when at least 85% of its grapes come from vineyards registered in the Old Vine Registry. The program includes five age tiers: 35+, 50+, 75+, 100+, and 150+ years.
The Registry describes itself as the world’s largest public database of old vineyards, with more than 12,500 vineyards across 43 countries. Ten producers from seven countries are among the first participants, including California’s Seghesio Family Vineyards.
The seal confirms documented vineyard age, not wine quality, sustainability, or farming practices. Still, it gives drinkers a clearer way to identify wines connected to vineyards with meaningful age and heritage.
For Symbolic Wines readers, the launch reflects a wider interest in terroir, vineyard history, and the distinctive character that older vines can bring to fine wine.
