Chateau Pontet Canet Pauillac 5th Grand Cru Classe FUTURES 2025 pre-arrival - ETA: Autumn 2028
Vineyard notes: "81 ha Certified Organic: Ecocert & Biodynamic: Biodyvin and Demeter Soils: Quaternary Gravel."
Robert Parker The Wine Advocate (98-100/100)
"A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot that weighs in at 13.3% alcohol, the 2025 Pontet-Canet is one of the finest wines this estate has produced. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cassis, wild berries and plums mingled with notions of violet and burning embers, it's full-bodied, ample and velvety, with a degree of structural polish and sensuality that is rare in the Médoc, ripe acids and a long, penetrating finish. Over the last handful of years, technical director Mathieu Bessonnet and his team have revitalized Pontet-Canet's vineyards with well-timed soil work and precise phytosanitary treatments; and since 2023, the careful use of "pieds de cuve" in the winery, along with early blending, more refined barrel choices and cooler temperatures in the chai—plus more precise bottling practices—have conspired to take this estate to new heights of quality and consistency. In 2025, the team formed lower-than-usual "ponts" (whereby the canopies of adjacent vines are braided together in an arch) to retain denser foliage to protect the fruiting zone from sunshine, and they waited to pick late in pursuit of full maturity in Cabernet Sauvignon, finishing on September 23. The result is one of the wines of the vintage." - Reviewed by: William Kelley (Published: Apr 30, 2026)
Critic tasting note: (2025 vintage)
"Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate notes of candied violets, black cherries, some nougat, inviting hint of precious wood, multi-faceted bouquet. Juicy, elegant, ripe heart cherries, fine extract sweetness, ripe, silky tannins, freshly structured, mineral, blackberry confit in the finish, finesse-rich, harmonious style." - Falstaff (98/100)
"A precise and beautiful wine with total integration of the fruit and polished tannins that give a caressing and seductive mouthfeel. It’s medium-bodied with lovely fruit, a gentle nature and an overall softness and gorgeousness. Yet structured." - James Suckling (97-98/100)
"Dark purple in color, the wine exudes currants, peppery spices, blackberries, and licorice on the nose. The palate is lush and creamy. Intensely concentrated with lift and balanced by richness, the wine culminates in a long, mouth-coating finish packed with black currants, chocolate, spice, mint, and flowers. The wine blends 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. 13.3% ABV. Harvesting took place September 2 - September 23. Much of the vintage's success is due to the late-June rains, followed by late-August rains, which helped achieve ripeness and lower ABV levels while adding lift and energy. The wine is aging in a combination of 50% new, French oak barrels, 35% Amphora, and neutral oak. Drink from 2032-2065." - Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider (97/100)

Producer Notes
"In the cellar, the guiding principle was to respect the fruit and avoid any excess. There was no punching down in 2025 and saignées were occasional. Rigor and precision governed every stage: from sorting to management of native yeasts, fermentation, oxygenation and inerting, everything was adjusted to preserve the integrity of the grapes and efforts pursued in the vineyard. Splendid, the 2025 vintage is concentrated, juicy, expressive, structured and elegant, without a doubt an exceptional vintage for the estate and a most remarkable Pontet-Canet."
Vintage Notes
After a milder-than-average winter, the vintage began with a particularly damp April. While cloud cover protected the vines from frost, it also created an early risk of mildew, now a recurring challenge. The mild winter and spring rain led to early, uniform budburst, with half of the vineyard reaching this stage by April 7 as temperatures neared 25 °C. On April 27, the weather changed dramatically. Temperatures remained warm, but little or no rain meant exceptionally dry conditions. Over the following four months, the vineyard saw only 96 mm of rainfall, and the estate’s vines progressed quickly from one phenological stage to the next. Flowering took place under ideal conditions: the first blossoms appeared on May 16, with mid-flowering seen throughout the estate by May 28, as temperatures exceeded 30 °C.
Vintage and style
The 2025 growing season in Bordeaux was early, hot and generally dry, producing small, concentrated berries with high ripeness yet surprisingly fresh acidity and very healthy fruit. Early harvest dates (Merlot picked from late August, Cabernets by mid‑September) and low yields point to a vintage of intensity rather than volume, with many estates reporting wines of depth and balance.
Terroir and farming
Pontet‑Canet lies on the heights of Pauillac, on classic deep Quaternary gravel over a clay‑limestone subsoil, a terroir that naturally gives structured, age‑worthy Cabernet‑dominant wines. The 81‑hectare vineyard has been fully biodynamic since 2004, making the château one of the pioneers and benchmarks for biodynamics among Médoc classed growths.
Blend and winemaking (barrel sample)
Preliminary information for 2025 indicates a blend around 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, broadly consistent with the estate’s recent style. Early barrel tastings describe a deep purple‑black color with vivid aromas of pure black fruit, great brightness and precision, and a palate that marries depth and concentration with freshness, energy and a very fine, elegant tannic frame.
Character and aging potential
Commentators on the en‑primeur samples highlight a structured, racy wine that feels very true to Pontet‑Canet’s identity: mineral and graphite notes, floral hints, pure cassis and blackberry, and a long, harmonious finish. Given the vintage conditions and the château’s track record, the 2025 should have substantial aging potential, likely rewarding long cellaring once it is bottled and delivered (current futures offers estimate delivery in 2028).
