De Sousa & Fils 'Mycorhize' Grand Cru Extra Brut NV

Critic tasting note:

"Elegant, mineral and complex due to strawberries and lemon zest mixed with chalk, white chocolate, fresh coconut and candied fruit. Medium-bodied and very precise on the palate. Smooth and silky with fine mousse. Structured and very long with fresh acidity and a mineral-laden finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold." - James Suckling

Robert Parker The Wine Advocate (95/100)

"The latest rendition of De Sousa’s Blanc de Blancs Mycorhize is showing brilliantly, offering up a complex bouquet of citrus oil, lemon curd, freshly baked bread and subtle hints of walnuts and stone fruit. Full-bodied, vinous and textural, it’s broad and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit, racy acids and a seamless, complete profile that’s enlivened by a pearly mousse. This is a fabulous effort that’s well worth seeking out. It's based on the 2016 vintage and was disgorged with three grams per liter dosage in April 2019.

I was immensely impressed by these new releases from Champagne De Sousa, and I shall be making a point of covering their wines in these pages in the future. Established in the 1950s in the village of Avize, farming is certified organic and biodynamic, and élevage takes place in a variety of vessels: stainless steel, oak and ceramic. The style is elegantly understated and texturally seamless, revealing considerable depth and character. I'll be visiting in the near future to make a more detailed report, but in the meantime, all these new releases come recommended."

Wine Enthusiast (94/100)

"Celebrating the symbiosis between the roots and the soil, this biodynamically produced wine is pure Chardonnay from the producer's home village of Avize. It is tensely textured and strongly mineral, showing the effect of the chalk soil on the wine. Acidity and tight citrus suggest this bottling is young. It will be better from 2020." - Roger Voss
