Platt Vineyard Estate Reserve West Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2023

Platt Vineyard Estate Reserve West Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2023 is a grand‑cru‑level, cool‑climate Chardonnay: concentrated, saline and intensely mineral, yet incredibly precise and refined. It’s powerful, deeply structured and clearly built for long aging.

Critic tasting note: (2023 vintage)

"A mouthwatering, full-bodied wine with a range of citrus flavors framed with blond-wood tones. Delicate white flowers with an iodine-like minerality and layers of richness and salinity in the finish. Built for aging. Drink from 2026." - James Suckling (99/100)

Vineyard and concept

  • 100% Chardonnay (Old Wente clone) from Platt Vineyard on the far West Sonoma Coast, a very cool, foggy, ocean‑influenced site with steep, late‑ripening slopes.

  • The Estate Reserve is a strict selection of the best three blocks in 2023, chosen to show maximum depth and mineral intensity.

  • Ownership and philosophy: AXA Millésimes (Pichon Baron, Suduiraut, Quinta do Noval, Domaine de l’Arlot) with Thomas Rivers Brown consulting, placing this firmly in the “icon” tier of modern California Chardonnay.

Vintage and winemaking

  • 2023 vintage: heavy winter rains, very cool spring (budbreak and flowering 3–4 weeks late), then a cool, even summer and autumn with no big heat spikes. Long hang‑time delivered full phenolic ripeness at moderate sugars — ideal for crystalline, ageworthy Chardonnay.

  • Harvest: October 4–26, block by block, once acids and phenolics matched ripe flavor.

  • Vinification and élevage:

    • Whole‑cluster pressing.

    • Barrel fermentation with native/selected yeasts; full malolactic with selected/native bacteria.

    • 14 months in 60‑gal French oak (roughly one‑third new, two‑thirds seasoned Burgundy barrels).

    • Minimal bâtonnage, very low intervention; bottled from barrel after racking to tank.

Tasting note

Appearance
Bright straw to pale gold, with great clarity and a luminous core.

Nose
Highly complex and intense: tangerine peel, citrus confit, lime zest, baked apple tart, ripe nectarine and apricot, framed by hazelnut, almond paste, pastry, white flowers, fennel and crushed rock. A fine gunflint / smoky reduction and an iodine‑like sea‑spray note underline the coastal, mineral character.

Palate
Full‑bodied but laser‑precise. The texture is compact, chalky and deeply layered, with saturated citrus and stone‑fruit flavors running through a tight, energetic frame. Oak is perfectly integrated: it adds breadth, cream and gravitas without obscuring freshness or minerality. The impression is of density without heaviness — a wine that feels coiled, vibrant and extremely focused.

Finish
Very long, saline and mouthwatering, with persistent citrus oil, stone fruit, hazelnut and chalk. Fine calcareous bitterness and oceanic notes stretch the finish out in a way that recalls top white Burgundy rather than typical California richness.

Style, aging and positioning

This Estate Reserve is best thought of as modern coastal grand‑cru Chardonnay: it marries California fruit and texture with Burgundy‑like tension, structure and mineral drive. You can easily plan for 10–15 years of evolution, with more brioche, hazelnut, honey and waxy depth emerging over time while the citrus and salt core stays intact.

Food pairing

Match it with rich but finely executed dishes:

  • Butter‑poached lobster, crab or scallops.

  • Roasted halibut, turbot or cod with beurre blanc or citrus‑cream sauces.

  • Roast chicken or guinea fowl with morels; veal or poultry in cream and mushroom sauces.

  • Aged hard cheeses (Comté, Gruyère, mature Cheddar) and truffle or mushroom dishes, where the wine’s tension and minerality balance richness beautifully.
