Bereche et Fils Brut Reserve NV

Critic tasting note:

"The domain was established in 1847 in Ludes, but it wasn't until more recently when Jean-Pierre Bérêche was one of the first growers to establish an independent reputation. His sons Raphaël and Vincent, now overseeing the house, have built on that work to craft some of today’s most distinctive Champagnes. They own 9 hectares across 4 villages and various terroirs. This organic wine is 30% Chardonnay (from Ludes), 35% Pinot Noir (from Ormes), and 35% Pinot Meunier (from the western Vallée de la Marne), including 30% reserve wines from their perpetual system, which has been resting and waiting on lees for two years. The base wines were aged in 60% wood (40% of which were small vats) and the rest stainless, and MLF is not allowed. The wines were held under cork while in bottle (agrafe), and this was disgorged in December 2022 with 6 g/L. Tasting quite smart at present, with a harmonious melody of crisp green apple, ample white cherry, strident lemon, and perfumed red currants that sail along the subtly generous palate, decked with savoury lees and kissed with a flinty reductive note, which culminates in a ginger finish. A substantial champagne, and one to easily pour alongside main dishes." (Treve Ring) - Gismondi on Wine

"I've been following the wines of brothers Vincent and Raphaël Bérêche since my student days, and it's been thrilling to watch them go from strength to strength. Their recent releases are some of their best to date: whether it's their ever-more precise and concentrated lieu-dit bottlings, their exquisitely ethereal Campania Remensis Rosé, or the fresher, tightly wound Reflet d'Antan. In short, everything here comes warmly recommended. As readers will know, the Bérêche brothers cultivate their soils and don't use herbicides or pesticides. Most of the vins clairs are vinified in barrel, and tirage is under cork rather than crown cap. The particularities of their various cuvées are chronicled in the accompanying notes."
