Bretaudeau Domaine de Bellevue 'La Justice' Amphores 2023
Bretaudeau Domaine de Bellevue “La Justice” Amphores 2023 is an intense, biodynamic white Vin de France from the western Loire, blending mainly Chardonnay with Savagnin to create a richly textured yet sharply mineral wine.
Terroir and viticulture
The fruit comes from a small parcel on gabbro and gneiss in the Vallée de la Moine near Gétigné, in the Pays Nantais, not far from the Atlantic. Vines were largely planted in the 1980s and are farmed organically and biodynamically, with hand harvesting and low yields to maximize concentration and energy.
Grapes and winemaking
La Justice is typically around 70–80% Chardonnay and 20–30% Savagnin (most sources specify about 80/20). Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts at low temperatures, with weekly bâtonnage, and the wine is aged about 14 months in large ovoid/foeder vessels (and in some descriptions a mix of foudres, amphorae and oak), whose porosity gently oxygenates the wine; it is bottled unfiltered with very little SO₂.
Tasting profile
Notes for the 2023 vintage describe a bright lemon‑yellow color. The nose combines pear, golden apple and citrus with white flowers, smoke, sea‑spray salinity and a subtle nutty, umami note from the Savagnin and long lees contact. On the palate it is full‑bodied and rounded yet vibrant, showing ripe orchard fruit and lemon, creamy texture, spine‑tingling acidity, striking minerality and a long, mouth‑watering, particularly saline finish.
Character and food pairing
Commentators emphasize the cuvée’s intensity, purity and almost Burgundy‑like dimension, with a salty, savory length that makes it very gastronomic. It pairs especially well with sole meunière, other buttery white‑fish dishes, shellfish, roasted poultry and rich vegetable dishes where its combination of richness, freshness and salinity can shine.
