Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion Pessac-Leognan (Minimum order: 6 bottle case) FUTURES 2025 Pre-Arrival

Château Les Carmes Haut‑Brion Pessac‑Léognan 2025 is one of the most distinctive and talked‑about reds of the vintage, a Left Bank grand vin dominated by Cabernet Franc with remarkable freshness, energy and depth. It is a highly original, ageworthy wine that combines floral intensity, velvety texture and saline tension in a very refined framework.

Critic tasting notes: (2025 vintage)

"Deep dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Ripe dark berry fruit, a hint of plums, floral touch, pleasant herbal spice, some nougat and orange zest. Complex, yet lively, ripe cherries and cranberries, fine, ripe tannins, literally opens up in the mouth, delicate extract sweetness, lingers for minutes, already very convincing in its youth, cassis and ripe cherries on the finish, delicate and multi-faceted, great future potential." - Falstaff (100/100)

"The precision is so seductive and intellectual, with aromas of fresh flowers, iron, graphite, cedar, blood oranges and black fruit. It's medium-bodied with a compact palate of intense tannins that melt into the wine. Rather weightless in nature. It kicks in at the end with incredible intensity and focus. 13% alcohol. 65% whole cluster. 54% cabernet franc, 29% cabernet sauvignon and 17% merlot, mostly co-fermented." - James Suckling (99-100/100)

"Almost opaque in color, it takes no effort to dig into the floral display. From there you encounter black cherries, licorice, spice box, menthol, cigar wrappers, blackberries and crushed rocks in the aromas. The palate is what steals the show with its vivid display of black, with red fruits, elegant, silky textures, and most importantly, purity of fruit. The velvety finish spreads all over your palate with touches of sea-salt, cocoa, Indian spices and lingering, dark fruits. Clearly, this is in competition with the best vintages the estate has ever produced. The ability to manage the potential of hydric stress, due to their terroir is a large part of what helped make 2025 such a success. The wine was made using 65% whole bunch clusters, blending 54% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 17% Merlot. It is interesting to note this is the highest percentage of Cabernet ever included in the blend. I think it really works here. 13% ABV, pH 3.59. The wine is aging in a combination of 70% new, French oak, 19% foudres, and 11% amphora. Picking took place September 7- September 19. Drink from 2029-2065." - Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider (98-100/100)

Site & Identity

Les Carmes Haut‑Brion comes from about 10 hectares of vines on gravel, clay and sand in the heart of Pessac‑Léognan, with an average vine age of over 40 years. The 2025 vintage marks a key step in the estate’s evolution: a Cabernet‑Franc‑led blend and extensive use of whole‑cluster fermentation give the wine an intensely floral, graphite‑and‑iron‑toned personality that stands out even among top Left Bank crus. Positioned as a Pessac‑Léognan for demanding enthusiasts, it is clearly built for long cellaring, with an optimal window suggested between 2030 and 2060.

Technical Tasting Note

  • Appearance: Deep, intense ruby with an opaque core and vivid, purple‑tinged reflections.

  • Nose: Fresh flowers, iron, graphite, cedar and blood orange, layered over ripe black fruit and smoky, spicy nuances of cardamom and sandalwood, plus hints of fresh blackberry and inky, savoury complexity.

  • Palate: Medium‑bodied but compact and densely woven, with an ample, immediately structured attack, dense yet velvety tannins, and a core of ripe black and red fruit carried by remarkable energy and saline tension.

  • Finish: Long, precise and remarkably persistent, evolving progressively toward a refined, floral‑smoky, mineral finish that underlines both power and finesse.

Winemaking & Style

The 2025 blend is 54% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot—the highest share of Cabernet Franc in the estate’s history—harvested between 7 and 19 September. Around 65% whole clusters were used, with the wine coming in at 13% alcohol and a pH of about 3.59, deliberately seeking “energy and vibration rather than sheer power.” Élevage is split between new barriques, large foudres and amphorae, all chosen to preserve balance and freshness while adding subtle complexity. The result is a grand vin with a velvety yet taut profile, floral intensity and a distinctive saline, graphite‑driven character, clearly “taillé pour une très longue garde.”

Food Pairing

Excellent with roast lamb or lamb saddle, rib of beef, duck breast, venison, game birds and dishes featuring truffle, black pepper or wild mushrooms. Its combination of florality, density and saline tension also makes it a superb match for refined modern gastronomy, particularly from the 2030s onward as its complexity unfolds in bottle.
