Domaine Heitz-Lochardet - Armand Heitz Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2021
Domaine Heitz‑Lochardet – Armand Heitz Corton‑Charlemagne Grand Cru 2021 is a powerful yet finely balanced Grand Cru Chardonnay from the historic Corton‑Charlemagne hill, showing both breadth and crystalline minerality in this cooler, classical vintage.
Terroir and origin
The vines sit on the upper slopes of Corton‑Charlemagne, between roughly 280 and 330 meters, on limestone with layers of marl, rendzinas and clay at the junction of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. This combination of altitude, exposure and very stony soils produces ripe but always tension‑driven fruit, with marked mineral and saline notes.
Viticulture and winemaking
Armand Heitz farms the site sustainably with a strong focus on biodiversity, low yields and precise, parcel‑by‑parcel work to emphasize terroir over sheer richness. The wine is aged about 11 months in French oak barrels, with around 20–40% new wood, enough to build structure and texture without overwhelming the natural character of the Chardonnay.
Tasting profile (2021)
Descriptions of the cuvée highlight complex, expressive aromas of ripe citrus (lemon, grapefruit), white and yellow stone fruits, pineapple, white flowers and a cooling minty or herbal lift, all underpinned by chalky minerality. On the palate it is elegant and well structured, with a generous, dense core of fruit, vibrant but balanced acidity, a soft, almost creamy texture and a long, persistent, mineral finish.
Style, aging and food pairing
Commentators present this Corton‑Charlemagne as a “formidable” Grand Cru that recalls the power of Montrachet combined with the tension of top Meursault sites, built for both early pleasure and long aging. It pairs especially well with rich dishes such as lobster, scallops, turbot or other noble white fish in beurre blanc, roasted poultry with cream or morels, and aged hard cheeses, where its depth and mineral cut can fully express themselves.
