2022 Guffens-Heynen Saint-Véran Premiers Jus is a superb, concentrated Chardonnay from the Mâconnais that combines ripe fruit, textural richness and a very long, saline finish. It is a serious white Burgundy with the trademark Guffens precision: generous, layered and built for aging.
The cuvée is based on first-press juice from Saint-Véran parcels, with references tying it to fruit from Clos de Poncetys and Les Combes. Guffens-Heynen uses this selection to capture the most refined, energetic part of the crop, and in 2022 the wine clearly benefited from warm, dry conditions that added concentration without losing freshness.
Appearance: Pale lemon to bright gold, with a luminous, youthful core.
Nose: Green pear, confit orange, almond paste, white peach, white flowers, honeyed stone fruit, mango and subtle baking spice.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a textural attack that quickly tightens into a taut, electric palate. Lime curd, citrus, white peach and confit fruit are wrapped in a precise mineral frame.
Finish: Long, measured and saline, with citrus peel, spice and a clean mineral edge that keeps the wine lively and focused.
This cuvée is made from Chardonnay and, in 2022, showed a slightly exotic, passerillé character from warm, dry pre-harvest weather. The élevage is carefully managed and one source notes a structure that calls for five to ten years of bottle age to show fully, which fits the wine’s blend of richness and tension. It is classic Guffens: ripe, exact and unmistakably gastronomic.
This is a very strong buy for customers who want a serious Saint-Véran with real class and aging potential. It sits comfortably in the premium white Burgundy tier, with enough depth for collectors and enough immediate appeal to work on an ambitious restaurant list.
It pairs beautifully with lobster, langoustine, scallops, turbot, sole with beurre blanc and roast chicken. It also works very well with creamy poultry dishes, risotto, aged Comté and refined seafood preparations.
