2023 Guffens-Heynen Saint-Véran Clos de Poncetys is a superb, highly expressive Chardonnay from one of the most distinctive sites in the Mâconnais. It is a serious, mineral white with real depth and tension, and in 2023 it was bottled as a tiny, collector-level cuvée.
Clos de Poncetys is a south-facing Saint-Véran parcel that Guffens selects from only in the best years, and 2023 marked the first separate bottling since 2018. The wine comes from a tiny production of around 900 bottles, which makes it one of the rarest and most sought-after wines in the domaine’s range.
Appearance: Pale lemon with a bright, luminous core.
Nose: Mandarin, musky peach, pear, lemon zest, white flowers, iodine, flint and smoky reduction.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with dense yellow fruit, yuzu, lemon, grapefruit and a glossy texture carried by tangy acidity.
Finish: Long, saline and mineral, with citrus peel, crushed stone and a lingering chalky tension.
The 2023 Clos de Poncetys is a Chardonnay built around concentration, reduction and tension, with a deliberately low-yield selection from the best south-facing slopes of the vineyard. The style is classically Guffens: intense, layered and uncompromising, with a mineral core that keeps the wine precise even as it becomes richer and more exotic in the glass.
This is one of the most compelling Saint-Vérans of the vintage and a genuine collector’s item because of its microscopic production and first separate bottling since 2018. It offers the kind of complexity, depth and aging potential that can justify a premium position on a serious white Burgundy list.
It pairs brilliantly with scallops, lobster, turbot, roast chicken, veal in cream sauce and mushroom dishes. Its reduction, minerality and tangy acidity also make it excellent with aged Comté, Parmesan and refined seafood cuisine.
