Jacques Lassaigne Clos Sainte‑Sophie Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature 2019 is a highly concentrated, single‑parcel Grand Chardonnay from Montgueux, combining precision, chalky drive and notable power. It is a complex, vinous Brut Nature with intense citrus and white‑fruit purity, deep mineral structure and clear long‑term aging potential.
Clos Sainte‑Sophie is a tiny walled vineyard (around 0.4 ha) on the chalk‑rich slopes of Montgueux, planted to old‑vine Chardonnay in the 1960s and often cited as one of the most distinctive sites in the area. The 2019 cuvée is farmed organically and biodynamically and vinified separately to showcase Montgueux’s combination of ripe fruit weight and pronounced chalk‑driven salinity, in a style that is both rich and finely etched.
Appearance: Light to medium golden colour with a fine, persistent perlage and a bright, crystalline aspect in the glass.
Nose: Pure and complex, blending fresh lemon and lime, green apple and crisp pear with white flowers and chalky, flinty mineral notes, lifted by a light smoky nuance and hints of toasted hazelnut.
Palate: Taut, vibrant and concentrated, with a tense, linear attack, bright citrus and green apple fruit, and a powerful Montgueux backbone wrapped in a silky, vinous texture. There is clear depth and breadth, but the brisk acidity and intense minerality keep the wine focused and energetic rather than heavy.
Finish: Long, chalky and saline, with yellow‑fruit and pastry echoes over a finely bitter, mouth‑watering end that underlines both structure and age‑worthiness.
Clos Sainte‑Sophie 2019 is 100% Chardonnay from the eponymous clos in Montgueux, vinified and aged in a mix of used Cognac, Savagnin and Burgundy barrels before extended lees aging in bottle. The wine is bottled Brut Nature (0 g/l dosage), allowing the ripe 2019 fruit, barrel complexity and chalky terroir to show with maximum clarity and tension. The style is that of a rich yet incisive Blanc de Blancs: spicy, fruity and pastry‑noted, but firmly anchored by mineral precision and a very dry, gastronomic profile.
Clos Sainte‑Sophie 2019 is a limited, high‑prestige cuvée that sits at the very top of the Jacques Lassaigne range and is strongly sought after by Champagne collectors and top restaurants. With its single‑clos origin, ambitious barrel work and zero‑dosage structure, it offers excellent long‑term cellaring potential and a compelling narrative—ideal for premium allocations, serious grower‑Champagne programs and clients looking for rare, characterful Blanc de Blancs.
This Champagne pairs superbly with lobster, langoustine, scallops, noble white fish (turbot, sole), and refined shellfish dishes. Its combination of richness, spice and chalky cut also makes it excellent with roast chicken, poularde with morels, veal in cream sauce, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmesan.
