Jean-Pierre Robinot Les Vignes de l'Ange L'Iris 2022
Jean‑Pierre Robinot Les Vignes de l’Ange Vin “L’Iris” 2022 is a profound, old‑vine Chenin Blanc from the Loire, made in a pure, no‑makeup natural style with remarkable depth and energy. It is tighter and more finely etched than some earlier vintages, with pristine fruit, great elegance and clear long‑term potential.
Site & Identity
L’Iris is Chenin Blanc from Robinot’s oldest vines, now over 90 years of age, grown on a mosaic of clay, limestone, flint and tuffeau in the Loir/Jasnières area north of the central Loire. Farming is organic and resolutely low‑input: no chemical treatments, no oenological additives and essentially no added sulfites, yielding intensely pure, deep and complex natural wines under the Les Vignes de l’Ange Vin label.
Technical Tasting Note
Appearance: Bright yellow to deep straw, with a lightly hazy, artisanal aspect in keeping with its natural, unfiltered style.
Nose: Very pure and layered, showing quince, pear, apple and stone fruit with floral tones (iris, white flowers), citrus zest, honeyed hints and a strong mineral, chalk‑and‑flint imprint.
Palate: Medium‑bodied but powerful, with a textural, barrel‑fermented attack that quickly tightens into a focused, saline, acid‑driven core; the 2022 shows pristine, clean fruit and real elegance, a little more tightly wound than some previous years. The overall impression is of great balance and poise, with intensity delivered more through length and savoriness than sheer weight.
Finish: Long, sapid and mouth‑watering, with lingering stone fruit, citrus peel, subtle honey and a persistent mineral/saline line that promises excellent evolution in bottle.
Winemaking & Style
L’Iris 2022 is 100% Chenin Blanc from very old vines, pressed directly into barrel and aged for around 18–24 months on lees before bottling. Vinification is fully natural: indigenous yeasts, no fining or filtration and effectively no added sulfur, with Robinot relying on long élevage and patience to stabilize and polish the wine. The style is that of a wild‑side, no‑sulfur, savory white—deep, vibrant, and iconic in the natural‑wine world, but also unusually precise and refined in this vintage.
Buying Outlook
L’Iris is highly allocated and often limited to one or two bottles per customer, reflecting its cult status and tiny production. The 2022 is described as a wine of “rare complexity,” impeccable balance and clear aging potential, making it an excellent choice for serious natural‑wine programs, collectors of top Chenin and lists that highlight iconic low‑intervention producers.
Food Pairing
This cuvée pairs beautifully with white‑sauce dishes, fried foods, pungent “stinky” cheeses, and roast white meats such as chicken or pork. Its acidity, texture and savory depth also make it superb with rich seafood, veal in cream sauces, truffled egg dishes and complex vegetable or mushroom cuisine where umami and structure are key.
