Joseph Colin Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2024 is a serious, mineral-driven white Burgundy from one of the Côte de Beaune’s greatest vineyards, combining power, density, and refined acidity in a classical grand cru style. The 2024 vintage is described as very good overall for Joseph Colin, with Bâtard showing pure floral and soil-driven aromatics, strong density, and clear aging potential.

Vineyard and vintage context

  • 100% Chardonnay from Bâtard-Montrachet, the celebrated grand cru straddling Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, known for rich, deep soils and powerful, long-lived wines.

  • 2024 was a difficult year (frost, mildew, uneven yields), but early pickers like the Colins generally achieved good balance and freshness. Joseph Colin harvested mid-September, with average yields around 40 hl/ha and notably high acidity at harvest.

  • The estate’s grands crus in 2024 are described as outstanding, with Bâtard showing bright floral, pear, and lemon notes, plenty of ripe fruit, and strong mineral support.

Winemaking and style

  • Joseph Colin’s style is classical, refined, and slightly slimmer than some relatives, with an emphasis on transparency, elegance, and terroir expression.

  • Fermentation and élevage are in French oak (typically a portion of new barrels), with aging on fine lees to build texture without masking minerality.

  • The wines are delicate, precise, and often “whisper-light” in feel, yet with real power and aging potential.

Tasting note

Appearance: Pale to medium gold, bright and limpid.

Nose: Pure floral nose with strong soil notes, lemon and lime scents, white flowers, apple and pear, and subtle spice.

Palate: Balanced and complex, with great density and a refined, minerally frame. The wine feels concentrated yet elegant, with ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and a clear chalky backbone.

Finish: Attractive, minerally, and long, with lingering citrus, white fruit, and a stony, saline close.

Aging and drinking window

The 2024 Bâtard-Montrachet is described as needing time to come together, with the balance and complexity to age gracefully for many years. A realistic drinking window is roughly 2029–2040+, with the wine likely gaining more honey, spice, and waxy complexity over time while retaining its citrus and mineral core.

Food pairing

It will pair beautifully with lobster, scallops, turbot, Dover sole, roast chicken, veal in cream sauce, and dishes with mushrooms or truffle. It also works very well with mature Comté and other hard cheeses.
