Critic tasting notes: (2025 vintage)
"Deep dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, subtle edge brightening. Delicate notes of candied violets, black cherries, cassis, blackberry confit, a hint of precious wood and lime zest, inviting, attractive bouquet. Juicy, red berry, elegant, finely structured, fine tannins, extract-sweet aftertaste, mineral-salty finish, a delicate food companion, shows length and potential." - Falstaff (97/100)
"Intense, deep, concentrated, multi-layered, and vibrant. There is lift, energy, and polish to the fruit on the palate. Rich, creamy, and powerful, yet balanced and harmonious, the finish delivers waves of sweet, supple red fruit with no hard edges, paired with a judicious touch of mineral essences that expand as they linger. There is so much ripe fruit that you can enjoy it on the young side, but you can age it for decades to gain additional levels of complexity. The wine blends 70% Merlot with 30% Cabernet Franc, 13.5% ABV. The harvest took place September 5 - September 19. Drink from 2030-2060." - Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider (97/100)
"A cool and salty wine with blackberries, black olives, crushed stone. Medium to full body with a crunchy and layered palate and a minerally and salient character. You can feel the limestone here. Supple at the end. From organically grown grapes. A blend of 70% merlot and 30% cabernet franc." - James Suckling (98-99/100)
Site & Identity
La Mondotte comes from just 4.5 hectares on the clay-limestone plateau east of Saint‑Émilion, beside Troplong Mondot and Pavie, and the vineyard is planted mainly to Merlot with Cabernet Franc completing the blend. The estate’s identity is rooted in organic farming, very old vines and extremely small production, which together give the wine its signature combination of power, silkiness and mineral precision.
Technical Tasting Note
Appearance: Deep, dark ruby with an opaque core and vivid purple reflections, signaling concentration and density.
Nose: Ripe blackberries, black cherries, violets, mulberries, dark plum, graphite, cocoa, licorice and subtle floral spice.
Palate: Full-bodied, opulent and tightly packed, with polished tannins, abundant dark fruit, precise acidity and a velvety but energetic texture.
Finish: Long, deep and persistent, with mineral lift, floral perfume and a savory, elegant echo that points to excellent longevity.
Winemaking & Style
The 2025 blend is reported at 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with an alcohol level around 13.5%. The wine is built from late-ripening, perfectly exposed fruit on clay-limestone soils, giving a profile that is rich but never heavy, and powerful while staying beautifully controlled. This is a deeply classical La Mondotte: sumptuous, precise and unmistakably built for the cellar.
Buying Outlook
La Mondotte 2025 is a high-priority En Primeur buy for collectors seeking a small-production Saint‑Émilion with prestige, depth and strong long-term appreciation potential. It offers the sort of rarity and terroir distinction that supports both drinking pleasure and resale interest, especially in a strong vintage where top Right Bank wines are drawing major attention. The combination of organic farming, microscopic scale and elite classification makes this one of the more compelling luxury Right Bank offers of 2025.
Food Pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, venison and truffle-accented dishes. Its plush texture and floral-mineral complexity also work especially well with mushroom dishes, slow-cooked beef and refined French cuisine.
