The wine was made from blending 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. 13.9% ABV. Drink from 2029-2045." - Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider (94/100)

Site & Identity

As the second wine of Château Margaux, Pavillon Rouge expresses the estate’s signature style in a slightly more approachable, but still very serious, form. It is sourced from plots across the historic 262‑hectare estate, with a Cabernet Sauvignon–driven profile that showcases the finesse, aromatic purity and silky tannins of top Margaux terroir.

Technical Tasting Note

Appearance: Deep dark ruby garnet with an opaque core, violet reflections and a brightening rim, underlining concentration and youth.

Nose: A gorgeous bouquet of roses and cherry blossom, black cherries and blueberries, with violets, lilac, rose petals, hints of black olive, slate, cocoa bean, mint, anise and subtle graphite spice.

Palate: Medium- to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant, with succulent raspberry and dark berry fruit, floral lift, precise, crisp tannins and a “pillowy” texture that combines opulence with freshness and perfect balance.

Finish: Long, vibrant and persistent, with juicy red and black fruits wrapped around graphite, delicate bitterness for definition, and a slightly saline, briny edge that keeps everything focused and elegant.

Winemaking & Style

In 2025, Pavillon Rouge represents 28% of the crop and is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Yields were just 22 hl/ha across the vineyard, the smallest Château Margaux vintage since 1856, and Pavillon Rouge is matured in around 60% new oak, bringing polish and subtle toast without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. With a low pH of 3.68 and high phenolic levels, the wine combines density, ripeness and remarkable freshness, clearly positioned as a serious, ageworthy second wine with true Margaux DNA.

Buying Outlook

Pavillon Rouge 2025 is an outstanding En Primeur purchase for clients seeking top Left Bank pedigree at a more accessible level than the grand vin. Critics highlight its luscious concentration, impeccable balance and strong structure, placing it among the reference second wines of the vintage with excellent aging potential from the early 2030s through at least the mid‑2040s. For a list or private cellar, it offers a powerful sales argument: the prestige of Château Margaux, a very small-yield, high‑quality year, and a wine that delivers immediate appeal plus long‑term development.

Food Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as roast lamb, côte de boeuf, veal or beef fillet, duck breast and game birds. Its floral perfume, silky tannins and graphite‑mineral line also make it ideal with truffle dishes, mushroom-based sauces, and elegant French cuisine where finesse and aromatic complexity are key.
