Raul Perez Ultreia La Claudina Godello Bierzo Spain 2021
Critic tasting note:
"Colour: bright yellow; Aroma: dried flowers, candied fruit, fine lees, pattiserie; Flavour: round, spicy, long;"
Robert Parker The Wine Advocate -
"There is a smoky twist in the 2021 Ultreia La Claudina, a low-yielding vintage, from a plot in Valtuille on sandy soils. The grapes struggled to ripen, and the wine has a more austere profile than the wines from yesteryear, when it was a lot more exotic and exuberant but with a spicy twist that they reckon comes from the foudre used. It's from one of the oldest plots from the newer plantings in the 1980s. 1,300 bottles produced. Raúl Pérez has purchased 90% of the vineyards used for the La Vizcaína project, which gives him a lot more control over viticulture. They produce around 300,000 bottles, 60% of them Ultreia Saint Jacques. 2021 is a super clean and defined vintage, quite transparent for the soils and the places, with very fresh and balanced wines. Some of the Ultreia wines showed a little more oak and might need some more time in bottle." - Reviewed by: Luis Gutiérrez
