Vignobles de la Coulee de Serrant 'Clos de la Coulee de Serrant', Loire 2024

The Clos is a Monopole of Joly's Family that has its own AOC Coulee de Serrant. In older vintages it was labelled as 'Chateau de La Roche aux Moines'. Triple 'A' producer. In 1995 'Clos de la Coulee de Serrant' was also released as Moelleux. Certified Biodynamic

Vineyard notes:

"It is with it only an “appellation controlee” of 7 hectares only. Located on very stiff slopes, dominating the Loire, the vines resulting from the type of vine “chenin” have more than 35 to 40 years of average age; oldest having more 80 years give wood to make new vines carrying the originality of the place. Partly cultivated with the horse, or the hand, the average output is with 20/25 hectolitres per hectare (40 authorized)."

Clos de la Coulée de Serrant 2024 is the flagship dry white from Nicolas Joly’s biodynamic estate in Savennières (Loire), made from 100% Chenin Blanc grown on its own 7‑hectare appellation monopole of schist and quartz. The 2024 is described as unusually concentrated for the vintage, with strong balance, purity, and classic Coulée de Serrant intensity and longevity.

Estate and vineyard

  • The Coulée de Serrant vineyard is a single walled clos of about 7 hectares in Savennières, overlooking the Loire near Angers.

  • It has its own AOC (Savennières–Coulée de Serrant) and is a monopole of the Joly family (Nicolas and Virginie Joly).

  • Soils are steep schist slopes with quartz, falling directly toward the river; vines are Chenin Blanc, with an average age around 35–40 years and some up to 80.

  • The entire estate has been farmed biodynamically since 1984, with manual harvest and very low yields.

Winemaking and style

  • 100% Chenin Blanc, vinified and aged to emphasize purity, minerality, and structure; alcoholic strength typically around 12.5–14%.

  • The wine is known for intense, long-lived dry Chenin with pronounced schist-driven minerality, high acidity, and complex savory, nutty, and waxy notes as it evolves.

  • Critics note the 2024s in Savennières show unusual concentration for the year, with Coulée de Serrant displaying particular depth and balance.

Tasting profile (2024)

While detailed published tasting notes for 2024 are still emerging, the house style and early comments point to:

  • Nose: Quince, apricot, ginger, floral and honeyed nuances, with a clear stony/mineral edge.

  • Palate: Medium to full-bodied, very pure and precise, with vibrant acidity, dense fruit, and a marked schist-driven salinity and bitterness that gives length.

  • Finish: Long, savory, and mouthwatering, with lingering citrus, stone fruit, and mineral notes.

Drinking window and serving

  • This is a wine built for aging; young vintages can be tight and intense, opening with time in bottle or a careful decant.

  • Typical drinking window for Coulée de Serrant is often 5–20+ years from the vintage, depending on style and storage.

  • Serve slightly cool (around 12–14°C) with rich fish, shellfish, poultry, and dishes with some fat or umami to match its intensity.
