Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge Pessac Leognan 2016

The 2016 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge from Pessac Leognan is a magnificent red wine that embodies the quintessential characteristics of this esteemed appellation. It offers a deep ruby hue and a rich bouquet of black fruits, cassis, and a touch of smoke. On the palate, it is full-bodied with firm tannins that give structure and weight to the wine, while maintaining a balanced and harmonious profile. The finish is long and complex with notes of graphite and dark chocolate. Overall, this is an exceptional vintage that will only improve with time.

This hugely dense wine is complex and full of juicy, succulent, smoky Cabernet Sauvignon. The tannins are at the service of the fruits. The wine still has a long way to go before maturity. Don't think about drinking it before 2025. Roger Voss

Robert Parker (Wine Advocate) -

The 2016 Les Hauts de Smith Rouge is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 60% Merlot from the younger vines of Smith Haut Lafitte. It is matured in 20% new oak. It has a straightforward but attractive bouquet with blackberry, brown spices and just a touch of vanilla from that oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, grainy tannin on the entry, plenty of black fruit tinged with leather and a slight ferrous scent. The acidity is nicely judged and it feels long and tender on the finish. Probably suitable for early drinking, as it is more approachable than others; nevertheless, it should drink well for several years. - Reviewed by Neal Martin
