Wine is a sensitive product and it needs proper care at each stage of life. At Symbolic Wines we pay great attention to wine storage conditions. These lesser-known rules of wine storage, that we know and abide, will help you protect your wine collection and ensure that each bottle ages gracefully, ready to be enjoyed at its best.   

 

1. Ideal Temperature Range

The ideal temperature for storing wine is typically between 50°F and 59°F (10°C to 15°C). Temperatures that fluctuate significantly can cause the wine to expand and contract, potentially damaging the cork and leading to oxidation. Keeping wine constantly in a stable, cool environment helps maintain its quality over time.

2. Humidity Control

While many people focus on temperature, humidity is also crucial for optimal wine storage. The ideal humidity level is about 60% to 70%. Too low humidity can dry out corks, leading to oxidation and spoilage, while too high humidity can encourage mold growth on the bottles and labels. Maintaining proper humidity levels prevents these issues and helps preserve the wine's integrity.

3. Dark Storage Environments

Light exposure can adversely affect wine, especially white and rosé varieties, which are more sensitive to light. Ultraviolet (UV) light can degrade the wine's quality and alter its flavors. Therefore, wine should be stored in dark environments, away from direct sunlight and artificial lighting. Wine racks and cellars are often designed specifically to minimize light exposure.

4. Positioning of Bottles

The way wine bottles are positioned can impact the integrity of the cork. Bottles with cork closures should ideally be stored on their sides to keep the cork moist. A dry cork can shrink and allow air to enter the bottle, leading to oxidation. However, bottles with screw caps or synthetic corks can be stored upright, as these closures do not require contact with the wine to stay sealed.

5. Vibration Sensitivity

Wine is sensitive to vibration, which can disturb the sediment in the bottle and lead to premature aging or reduction in quality. Excessive movement can also negatively impact the wine's development. For optimal storage, it's best to keep wine in a quiet area, free from heavy machinery or frequent movement, such as near washing machines or in high-traffic areas.
