Château Margaux has appointed Aurélien Valance as managing director, with the transition set to take place at the end of 2026. Valance currently serves as deputy managing director for sales and operations at the first-growth Bordeaux estate. He will succeed long-serving Managing Director Philippe Bascaules, who is stepping down and retiring at the end of 2026 after more than three decades associated with the estate, but will stay on as a consultant for key technical periods like harvesting, winemaking, and blending.
The appointment continues a period of internal succession at one of Bordeaux’s most closely watched estates. Valance’s existing responsibilities in sales and operations place him at the center of the château’s commercial and operational work, making the move a natural progression rather than an external reset.
For collectors, the development is significant because leadership continuity matters at estates whose wines are bought, cellared, and traded over decades. Château Margaux remains one of the defining names in the fine-wine market, and the appointment will be followed closely by buyers tracking the estate’s next chapter.
The story reinforces the enduring importance of provenance, estate stability, and long-term vision in Bordeaux — themes central to Symbolic Wines’ approach to serious collectible wine.
