We are deeply saddened by the passing of Daniel Cathiard, the visionary owner of Château Smith Haut Lafitte and a key figure of modern Bordeaux, who has left us at the age of 81, January 29th, 2026. Former top-level skier and successful entrepreneur, he transformed a forgotten Pessac‑Léognan estate into a pioneering, biodynamic grand cru and a landmark of wine tourism together with his wife Florence.
From the early‑morning walks among his vines in Bordeaux to the creation of Cathiard Vineyards in Napa Valley, Daniel devoted his life to shaping places where nature, wine and people meet in harmony. His legacy now continues through Florence, their daughters Mathilde Thomas and Alice Tourbier, and their five grandchildren, as well as through every bottle of Smith Haut Lafitte opened around the world.
May he rest in peace; his wines and his vision will long remain an inspiration to all wine lovers.
